Are you living in your PURPOSE now?

Living and working with purpose is a process of self-discovery and one most of us never let ourselves undergo – Shelly Prevost

Does this sound like you?

  • You aren’t sure if you are living in your purpose right now
  • You are looking for your purpose
  • Skeptical about the idea of finding your purpose

If you can relate to one of those 3 bullets or even others then you may not be living in your purpose.  According to Merriam-Webster dictionary Purpose is defined as: the reason why something is done or used – the aim or intention of something.

I believe a part of why people do not live in their purpose is social norming.  In social norms, actions are often based on misinformation about or misperceptions of others’ attitudes and/or behaviors.  Often times this happens so much that the behaviors are misinterpreted or perceived as real.  Social norming starts at childhood.  As children we are mostly taught to fit in with what makes sense to other people.  When we endure this, the perception is that what we are fitting into is the reality and in turn becomes purpose in life.  A lot of the times it is like fitting a square peg into a round hole.  How can one possibly “follow in the footsteps” of another when that may not be the path that is supposed to be laid out for them.  Discovering purpose clearly defines the path.

I remember a time during my high school years when I was having some personal difficulties and I reached out to a counselor at my school.  I told her my story of being raised by my grandparents and my mother being a drug addict.  Her first response to my story was that she was surprised that I hadn’t turned out to be like my mom or at least influenced by my mom’s situation to be a bad teenager.  I believe at that age I had a distinct purpose and that was to not end up like her.  I also believe at that time I went against the social norms of my society at that time.

Discovering your purpose and living in it is probably one of the greatest feelings.  I just don’t want my readers to continue to living in the “dark side” of life.  When you find your purpose, trust me a light will shine from within and be seen on the outside.
